Dear Families:

I hope you and your students have enjoyed a smooth start up to the new school year. As I am sure you have noticed through our drone videos and other photos from the building site, construction is progressing on the new Kingston Secondary School (KSS).

As we reported to you last December, several unforeseen disruptions, including weather delays and labour actions, put the project behind schedule. Given the size and scope of this large and complex build, setbacks sometimes occur, and have a cumulative impact on schedules.

The Board has worked closely with the architect and contractor over the past several months to regain some of the lost time wherever possible. We have confirmed over the summer months a revised schedule that will see substantial completion (the bulk of the work complete) in March or April 2020 with the Board taking occupancy of the space sometime in May 2020. Moving into the new school in the spring of 2020 would be disruptive to students preparing for exams, and in some cases, graduation.  As a result, we will not move students and staff into the new building during the 2019-2020 school year. KCVI will remain open until the end of June 2020.

Work to move learning materials, furniture and technology into the new school will occur over late spring and summer 2020. Students and staff will move into  Kingston Secondary School in September 2020 for the start of the 2020-2021 school year.

We recognize this is an additional delay, but the Board is focused on ensuring as smooth a transition as possible for students, families and staff. In the meantime, students and staff will continue at KCVI where they are already building the new KSS school community.

We appreciate your continued support, understanding, and patience as we move through the final months of construction and into our new school.

Sincerely,
Krishna Burra
